A special thanks to Oni Press and NetGalley for the ARC.

We’re deeper into the depths of Saturday Morning Memories. I have gone through past book adaptations such as BIKER MICE FROM MARS, VR TROOPERS, and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers but now we’re going to review a story set on a short-lived cartoon series titled WILD WEST C.O.W.BOYS OF MOO MESA, written by Matthew Hotson and illustrated by Juan Gedeon. And for more reviews, click here to read up on past reviews.

Before he took the badge, our tale begins in the lawless border town known as Moo Mesa, where we meet Marshal Moo Montana in one of his earliest adventures. In a time gripped by fear and uncertainty, disorder pervades the desert, and its citizens have started to go missing—including Moo’s former mentor, the respected Sheriff Mary Quine. With shadows growing across the mesa, Moo must navigate old grudges, new alliances, and a conspiracy that reaches deep into the heart of the mesa’s past. This Trade Paperback collects Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa #1–4.

Between the toys and the classic television series, Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa has always held a special place in my heart — right next to Mighty Max. However, the new comic book series tells a bit of a different story.

The entertainment industry’s endless cycle of reviving old properties often comes with challenges, especially with prequels. For a short-lived cartoon that only had 26 episodes, pulling off a compelling continuation is no easy task. Thankfully, writer Matt Hotson mostly succeeds. He pushes the envelope of what was originally a family-friendly, All-Ages Western tale by hinting at darker moments (including death), while still balancing it with the humor, puns, and dad jokes that longtime fans will appreciate.

For the art, Juan Gedeon handles the linework, with colors by Carlos Cabrera and lettering by Jeff Powell. I wasn’t previously familiar with this creative team, but Gedeon’s dynamic linework quickly became one of my favorite parts of this collection. The action-packed panels are full of detail, and the newly designed enemies and characters help breathe fresh life into the old tale. Cabrera’s coloring perfectly captures that classic Western feel, while Powell’s lettering keeps everything clean and energetic.

The WILD WEST C.O.W.BOYS OF MOO MESA TP will be available on July 14 in print and digital. Fans of the classic cartoon series will enjoy it, and new readers will enjoy the book but will have go to YouTube to watch the classic episodes.
