The Second Movie hasn’t been released but it hasn’t stopped SEGA and Paramount from greenlighting a third Sonic Movie, expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog Cinematic Universe even further.
It also has been confirmed today, that SEGA is moving forward with a spin-off series focusing on Knuckles the Echidna, with Idris Elba returning to voice as Knuckles.
SEGA’s CEO, Haruki Satomi weighed in on Sonic’s Future and Sonic’s Legacy saying: “We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live-action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed. We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them, 2022 is shaping up to be a significant year for the franchise with the second film being released this April, as well as Sonic Frontiers, the highly anticipated video game title, coming this holiday. Sonic has been beloved by fans across the world for over 30 years and we look forward to continuing to bring memorable moments and experiences to them for many years to come.”

Jeff Fowler will be directing once again, based on a script by Pat Casey & Josh Miller, and John Whittington, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opens in U.S. cinemas on April 8th, 2022. The first film had the biggest opening weekend for a Video Game Movie in the United States and Canada, It grossed $319.7 million worldwide, becoming the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2020 and the highest-grossing video game film adaptation of all time in North America. Colleen O’Shaughnessey will be returning to the role of Sonic’s Best Friend and Sidekick, Miles “Tails” Prower. Also joining the gang will be Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna.
