LeSean Thomas’ Yasuke has been nominated for Outstanding Animated Series at 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards

The nominations for the 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards are in and nominated for the Outstanding Animated Series Category is LeSean Thomas’ Original Jidaigeki Fantasy Series, Yasuke.

The 53rd NAACP Image Awards celebrates the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color across more than 80 competitive categories from the film, television + streaming, music, literature, and podcasts. It will premiere on Saturday, February 26th, 2022 at 8:00 PM ET/PT on BET and will be hosted by the seven-time NAACP Image Awards winner Anthony Anderson.

Inspired by the story of the very first African Samurai named Yasuke, a warrior who served under Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku Period, this Original Jidaigeki Series was created by LeSean Thomas (known for his work on Black Dynamite, Children of Ether, and Cannon Busters) is the Director, Creator, and Executive Producer of this project. For the Crew involved, MAPPA handled the animation production, Koike Takeshi is in charge of Character Design. DJ and Rapper, Flying Lotus composed the Music and Satoshi Iwataki is the Chief Animation Director, and Takeru Satō is the Chief Technical Director. Kenichi Shima is in charge of sub-character designs while Minoru Nishida is in charge of World Art Design and Art Setting. Junichi Higashi directs the art, Yuki Nomoto is the 3D CG director, and Hyo Gyu Park is the compositing director of photography. Azusa Sasaki is the color key artist, and Mutsumi Takemiya is editing.

Singer, Thundercat performed the opening theme “Black Gold”, and Flying Lotus performed the Ending theme “Between Memories” which also featured Niki Randa and Thundercat.

The Anime Series was number 7 on the US’s Netflix Top Ten Television Shows and Movies list on its debut weekend. Musician, Flying Lotus teased that there were big plans to expand the franchise, which was also featured during MAPPA’s 10th Anniversary Stage Show.


Yasuke also received a Manga Adaption, according to Shogakukan Seinen Magazine, Monthly Big Comic Spirits. The series involves Mangaka Satoshi Okunishi. The Anime Series is currently available to watch on Netflix.
