Yasuke Anime gets a Manga Adaption, set to debut July 27th in Shogakukan’s Monthly Spirits Magazine

Breaking News unfolding from Publisher Shogakukan and Anime News Network, the newest anime series from Netflix and Mappa Studio Yasuke will be getting a Manga Adaption, according to the latest issue of the Seinen Magazine called Monthly Spirits, the series will involve Mangaka Satoshi Okunishi and will debut on July 27th.

Inspired by the story of the very first African Samurai named Yasuke, a warrior who served under Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku Period, this Original Jidaigeki Series was created by LeSean Thomas (known for his work on Black Dynamite, Children of Ether, and Cannon Busters) is the Director, Creator, and Executive Producer of this project while Koike Takeshi is in charge of Character Design. Flying Lotus is composing the Music and Satoshi Iwataki is the Chief Animation Director, and Takeru Satō is the Chief Technical Director. Kenichi Shima is in charge of sub-character designs while Minoru Nishida in charge of World Art Design and Art Setting. Junichi Higashi directing the art, Yuki Nomoto is the 3D CG director, and Hyo Gyu Park is the compositing director of photography. Azusa Sasaki is the color key artist, and Mutsumi Takemiya is editing. LaKeith Stanfield is voicing Yasuke. In the Japanese dub, 36-year-old American-Japanese Jun Soejima is cast as Yasuke, alongside Takehiro Hira as Nobunaga Oda and Kiko Tamura as Saki.

The Series made it to number 7 in the U.S.’s Netflix Top Ten Television Shows and Movies list in its debut weekend and musician Flying Lotus teased that they had big plans to expand the franchise, the series franchise also will be featured in MAPPA’s 10th Anniversary Stage Show.


In a war-torn feudal Japan filled with mechs and magic, the greatest ronin never known, Yasuke, struggles to maintain a peaceful existence after a past life of violence. But when a local village becomes the center of social upheaval between warring daimyo, Yasuke must take up his sword and transport a mysterious child who is the target of dark forces and bloodthirsty warlords.
