What game are you playing, Raiden? What magic powers this delusion?” ~Shao-Kahn

Time Travel, Blood and Guts, Fatalities even gorier than before; This was one of the most fascinating takes on Mortal Kombat in Years, bringing in new ways to torture your opponent with kombos, Brutalities, and now Fatal Blows. Even in kombat, NetherRealm Studios has incorporated the X-Ray visuals into the game, through weapon use or by physical hits.

Ever had one of those moments where you’d wish there was something you could tell your past self? Well, in the game that is a bitter pill to swallow when the past version sees how grim and abysmal things have gotten for them and their friends in the future; Then you have Shao-Kahn The Conquering Emperor, meeting Kotal again, assuming that him and his fellow Osh-Tekk were still kept hidden away by Shang-Tsung, used for experiments. The storyline has improved drastically and now they found a way to explain why every game has been different over the years; Timelines were changed by an evil titan named Kronika.

Shang Tsung’s Island (The Krypt)

Welcome, traveller. I am Shang Tsung, and this… is my island. I bid you welcome to explore. Hidden among the island’s ruins are treasure, magic, and very special artifacts. Take what you want… within reason. You will find the time spent here is well-rewarded…

Another neat feature that was brought back to the latest MK game was the Open World, you can explore the Island but a word of caution it takes an Online Connection to stay in the krypt, you don’t have to worry about saving because it automatically saves as you move along on the island, it requires you to have three forms of currency: Koins, Soul fragments and Hearts. What I liked most of exploring the Krypt was the clever easter eggs that was hidden along the way, the Kombatant statues from the first Mortal Kombat almost brought a tear to my eye because it was so long since I’ve seen it. Also, a word of caution of you scare or get startled easily. The Krypt Beast makes it’s terrifying return whenever putting on Kenshi’s blindfold (Talk about super creepy jump scare). The Krypt has unique treasures that can help you along the way, from Crafting to konsumables you can collect while getting items that could help you unlock puzzles or certain parts of the Island.

Towers of Time

It is ever-changing in rotation, challenging, and it grants limited rewards. The Towers of Time is a new mode in this game, offering players a chance to level up characters, their gear and of course awarding currency as well. It offers Towers that serve as tutorials, The Gauntlet, Summoned towers, Timed, and lastly, Character Towers. You can unlock numerous things while battling through the towers; It can get difficult but if you’re a gamer that loves a challenge like yours truly, this is the best.

Kustomizing

Ed Boon showing off the Kustomizible options

Like Injustice 2, you have a chance to customize your gear and Augments, as I mentioned in the Krypt portion of the review that you can unlock Augments to enhance your abilities through the towers of time, the krypt or even AI battles.
