Godzilla: Minus Zero is setting new box office precedents, according to a report from Deadline. In a record-shattering stat, IMAX and PLF screens accounted for a massive 74% of the total weekend gross. The premium-format surge propelled the film to a powerhouse $33 million domestic debut after securing $14.5 million on Friday.
That share was bigger than Universal’s The Odyssey, which collected 52% of its $123.5M opening weekend from both IMAX and PLF auditoriums. This success was from a successful marketing campaign in North America, which saw it spend under $10 million, this fact is proven true because iSpot shows zero TV spots being purchased for Godzilla Minus Zero. Japan’s running cume on Godzilla Minus Zero since Tuesday is up to $11.8M (or 2.08 billion yen).
Godzilla Minus Zero is delivering a record domestic opening for GKIDS and the strongest debut ever for a live-action foreign-language film. (The overall foreign-language record remains with Sony/Crunchyroll’s Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle at $70.6 million.) Takashi Yamazaki’s sequel looks unstoppable in its opening weekend. Warner Bros. Animation’s The Cat in the Hat is on track for roughly $20 million after $1 million in previews and should open in second place. Angel Studios’ Drummer Boy is projected at $8.8 million for third after a $3.5 million Friday, opening at third place.

With a projected $31–32 million opening weekend, Godzilla Minus Zero has delivered GKIDS a record-shattering domestic debut and the highest live-action foreign-language opening in history—leaving its competition in smoldering ash and debris. The King of the Monsters has reclaimed the box-office throne in emphatic fashion, and early audience scores suggest its reign could last well beyond opening weekend.
Godzilla Minus Zero is currently in theaters, while its Oscar-winning predecessor, Godzilla Minus One, is available now on Digital, DVD, 4k, and Blu-ray.

War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life.
Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant.
There is no third time. Everything ends here.
