Election Day arrived, and with it came a massive Super Saiyan Blue-themed wave of change. Nowhere was that shift bigger than in Texas, where Nathan Johnson became the first Democrat elected Attorney General since 1994. But long before he made history at the ballot box, Johnson was a composer who scored the English dub of the anime series Dragon Ball Z.
“If you grew up watching Dragon Ball Z, you might know me better than you think: I composed the musical scores for 67 episodes and five movies and had a great time doing it,” Johnson said in a June interview with Texas Sen. Taylor Rehmet. The gig, he added, gave him instant street cred with his kids and their friends — plus a creative outlet and a cultural connection most people never get to experience.
The same musical scores that once played while a generation watched Goku transform later gave Johnson an unexpected cultural connection with some of those same viewers as adult voters.
Johnson’s Experience with the Dragon Ball Z Series:
- Television Series: Dragon Ball Z “Ultimate Uncut Edition” Re-Dub
- Composed the replacement English dub background score covering the Saiyan Saga and early Namek Saga.
- Theatrical Movies (Funimation Eng. Dubbed):
- Movie 2: Dragon Ball Z: The World’s Strongest
- Movie 3: Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might
- Movie 10: Dragon Ball Z: Broly – Second Coming (composed with the band I.O.N.)
- Movie 12: Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn (collaborated with Dave Moran)
- Movie 13: Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon (notably learned to play the ocarina specifically for Tapion’s Theme)
- Movie 2: Dragon Ball Z: The World’s Strongest
- Notable Indiviual Tracks & Themes:
- Tapion’s Theme (Wrath of the Dragon)
- Gogeta’s Theme / SSJ3 Goku vs. Janemba (Fusion Reborn)
- Get What’s Coming (Vegeta vs. Beast Zarbon)
