What made (and makes) it Legendary

When the video game industry first moved into fully 3D worlds, the territory was still largely uncharted in 1998. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time led the charge into the unknown, armed with technical achievements that would become foundational to modern game design. Players still remember the first time Hyrule Field opened under a bright, sunny sky… the chill of returning as Adult Link to a dark and twisted Hyrule shaped by Ganondorf… and how the simple tones of an ocarina melody could change the world in an instant. It pioneered systems we now take for granted and wrapped them in a story about growing up, responsibility, and hope that continues to resonate.

What keeps it timeless is its perfect balance: groundbreaking enough to reshape an entire industry, intimate enough that players felt like they were the hero of time. It is important to remember that the upcoming remake for the Switch 2 doesn’t just polish a classic—it gives a new generation a chance to experience the adventure that taught us what a great game could be.

Speaking of groundbreaking, it introduced the gameplay mechanics that would be a revolutionary part of modern gaming. Introducing the world to Z-targeting, a lock-on combat system that fixed 3D spatial awkwardness, turning frantic movement into tactical, clean swordplay, context-sensitive controls that help the HUD clean and intuitive, and a dual-timeline structure that made game progression feel emotionally weighted and earned. Accompanied by an unforgettable soundtrack, Ocarina of Time arrived almost as fully formed as the definitive edition of a 3D adventure. To this day, you can find yourself lost in Hyrule, its characters lingerie in our memoriesand its sense of wonder has never been matched—only echoed. Decades later, it remains the standard against which so many games are measured.

What made the Ocarina of Time legendary in 1998 continues to hold strong today. As the remake prepares for its debut on November 5th, both longtime fans and the new generation will finally get to experience the adventure that defined 3D gaming—polished, expanded, and more immersive. The Hero of Time prepares to ride again, saving Hyrule once more.
