Take-Two Subpoena Targets Personal Data of Thousands of Discord Users Over GTA 6 Leaks

There is one word to describe the situation involving the GTA 6 leak: CHAOS. Take-Two’s legal team has been putting in the extra hours scouring the digital landscape for the identity of the persona known as Cyberleek— an Elusive leaker who has turned a copy of the unreleased game into both a viral spectacle and a cryptocurrency payday.

It is a mess that Take-Two has been keen to rectify. The publisher has requested subpoenas from both Microsoft and Discord, the scope of which has some players concerned about the privacy of their accounts. The Verge obtained a document that specified Take-Two was requesting “all identifying information associated with all user accounts that are/were members communicating with the Discord server(s) listed below during the time period from June 1, 2026 to present.“

The information included “the account ID, registration email, registration and last-login IP addresses, phone number, linked connections (Google/Xbox/etc.), any associated device identifiers (MachineGuid/MSA), and content related to Grand Theft Auto (‘GTA’), Rockstar or Cyberleek from their OneDrive account.” In my honest opinion, it is a frightening situation if Take-Two gets their way, they will be handed the personal information of thousands of users.

Discord is trying to assure their fears for the time being, Discord’s marketing director, Ryan K. Rigney wrote on Twitter: “Discord has not yet been served with a subpoena from Take Two. When we do, we’ll evaluate the validity and scope before responding.” The subpoena has been approved, but it has not been formally served as of August 21st.

Whether Discord will hand over the requested data— and how broad that data dump will be— remains to be seen. In the meantime, the GTA 6 leak saga continues to raise uncomfortable questions about privacy, copyright enforcement, and how far a major publisher is willing to go protect its biggest release.
