The Lanterns SDCC panel featured stars Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, and Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, alongside co-creators Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King. The new Lanterns trailer reveals Hal and John’s Earth mystery tied to one of the Green Lantern Corps’ oldest foes, the Manhunters.

Attendees were shown seven scenes from the series, including Hal testing John’s readiness as a Lantern and Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) realizing Hal is training Stewart as his replacement—not his backup. The panel confirmed Lanterns is an eight-episode series premiering August 16 on HBO Max.

The Manhunters first appeared in 1st Issue Special #5 (August 1975), created by Jack Kirby. They are extraterrestrial androids built by the Guardians of the Universe as their original interstellar police force. Over time, the Manhunters grew self-aware and began to resent their limitations, prioritizing the relentless hunting and punishment of the wicked over true justice. This led to their rebellion, highlighted by the Massacre of Sector 666, after which the Guardians defeated and largely destroyed them. The surviving Manhunters were exiled and have since plotted revenge against the Guardians and their replacements, the Green Lantern Corps.
