At the Bandai Namco Filmworks panel held during San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, it was announced that acclaimed director Kenji Kamiyama—known for his work on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East, and Star Wars: Visions (“The Ninth Jedi”)—will serve as director and series composer for the new Mobile Suit Gundam anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO. The series, produced by SOLA ANIMATION, is scheduled for release in 2027.
Kamiyama will also be in charge of the series’s scripts, and Toh Enjoe— known for his work on The Ghost in the Shell, Godzilla Singular Point, The Empire of Corpses will be collaborating on the world-building in the anime’s science fiction setting. This new series forms the cornerstone of the RG Project, a next-generation multimedia initiative that links the anime with the upcoming game Gundam Rogue Orbit in a shared continuity. The anime is set roughly 100 years before the events of the game.
The RG Project:
The RG Project is set in an entirely original timeline known as After Apocalypse (A.A.), separate from the Universal Century of the original Mobile Suit Gundam and other existing continuities. This distinguishes it from recent series such as Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, which unfolds in an alternate version of the Universal Century. Instead, RG XARX-ZERO introduces a fresh universe built around humanity’s forced exile from Earth after a conflict with an alien self-replicating ecosystem referred to as the “Apocalypse.”
