The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s acclaimed one-shot manga Look Back (ルックバック) has dropped an emotional new trailer alongside six fresh cast announcements.
Set to hit theaters on September 11th, the film—directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda—promises an emotional journey of friendship and creative passion that fans are already raving about across social media. With standout performances from leads Natsuki Deguchi and Aju Makita, this cinematic take on the beloved story is generating major excitement ahead of its release.

The new cast members join leads Natsuki Deguchi and Aju Makita, who star as Fujino and Kyomoto, while Furi Nanase and Rokka Okada portray the characters’ childhood versions, respectively. Hirokazu Kore-eda serves as director, screenwriter, and editor; the Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker previously took home the prestigious award at the 71st Cannes Film Festival for his 2018 masterpiece Shoplifters. Bandō is composing the music for the film.
As of July 2026, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back manga has surpassed one million copies in circulation. It is the first Live-Action film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s work. In March 2026, GKIDS acquired the US, Canadian, UK, and Irish distribution rights for the Live-Action film adaptation, and will be released in 2026.

Look Back (ルックバック) is a one-shot web manga written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Published on Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ on July 19, 2021, it became an instant sensation with over 2.5 million views on its first two days. The acclaimed title ranked #1 in the 2022 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook, won the first Rakuten Kobo E-book Award in 2023, placed second at the 15th Manga Taisho Awards, and earned a 2023 Eisner Award nomination. The one-shot was published online in English by Viz Media and Shueisha’s Manga Plus platform. Viz Media published the volume on September 20, 2022. Its popularity led to a highly successful anime film adaptation by Studio Durian that premiered in June 2024, further boosting the story’s global reach and critical acclaim. GKIDS announced during their Anime Expo panel that they will release a 4K UHD Collector’s Edition for the anime film of Fujimoto’s “Look Back” one-shot manga on September 8th. The anime film is available to stream on Amazon’s Prime Video.

The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.
