Tubi is known for quietly adding hidden gems to its free streaming library, but this one stands out: Kochikame (こち亀), the long-running anime adapted from Osamu Akimoto’s iconic manga, has made its official debut on the ad-supported service.
Western audiences will be able to watch the first 51 episodes of Kochikame on TUBI. In May 2025, the classic anime series made its North American debut on the It’s Anime Powered by REMOW YouTube channel.
Kochikame (こちら葛飾区亀有公園前派出所), written and illustrated by Osamu Akimoto, was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump from September 21, 1976, to September 17, 2016. The series spans approximately 1,960 chapters collected into 201 tankōbon volumes. In addition to its massive popularity, it has inspired a long-running TV anime adaptation (1996–2004), a new anime project announced for the manga’s 50th anniversary, three animated films, live-action films, a TV drama, and multiple stage adaptations. The character Ryotsu Kankichi has also appeared as a playable fighter in Weekly Shōnen Jump crossover games such as Jump Super Stars, Jump Ultimate Stars, and J-Stars Victory VS. By 2014, the manga had sold over 157.2 million copies. It held the Guinness World Record for “Most volumes published for a single manga series” with its 200th volume in 2016, before being surpassed in 2021. In 2025, a permanent Kochikame Memorial Museum opened in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo, to celebrate the series’ legacy.
