Martial arts manga have produced countless classics, but few have achieved the cult status and raw intensity of Baki the Grappler. With the recent release of the Perfect Edition, it’s the perfect time to revisit Volume 1 from legendary creator Keisuke Itagaki. For more reviews, head over to my review section.
A seventeen-year-old boy enters a karate and shakes the foundation of the Martial Arts scene. As he effortlessly defeats his opponents, the world’s top tournamentfighters are left to ask: just who is this bizarrely strong young man, and what is he trying to achieve?
As a longtime fan of the series, the Perfect Edition gave me a welcome opportunity to experience Baki the Grappler from the very beginning. The first volume effectively introduces both new and returning readers to the core of the series: Baki Hanma’s relentless pursuit of true strength. While the manga is famous for its wildly exaggerated fighting techniques and superhuman physical feats, Itagaki emphasizes that victory ultimately stems from mental fortitude, tactical insight, and the willingness to push beyond human limits— not brute force alone.

Speaking of brute force, the story quickly throws Baki into a high-stakes Karate tournament. The reigning four-time champion, Atsushi Suedo, warms up by dominating junior fighters, exuding arrogance fueled by his raw physical power and tournament success. In contrast, Baki Hanma enters the arena as a white-belt competitor, his body covered in scars from unregulated fights. Neither the crowd nor Suedo has any idea who this unassuming young fighter truly is or how dangerous he can be.
Having discussed the story premise and central themes of the Perfect Edition, it’s worth taking a closer look at the artwork in Volume 1. Keisuke Itagaki’s style is exactly what one would expect from a hard-hitting martial arts manga: bold, energetic panels that emphasize raw physical power, explosive motion, and intense close-quarters combat. Every punch, kick, and grapple carries a visceral weight, making the fights feel dynamic and impactful across the page.

What helps the volume avoid feeling one-note is Itagaki’s occasional use of light humor. Brief comedic beats — often centered on character expressions or over-the-top reactions — provide welcome breathing room amid the otherwise serious and brutal tone. This balance keeps the reading experience engaging rather than relentlessly heavy. One of the most striking aspects is the sheer level of detail Itagaki pours into human anatomy and fighting techniques. His time in the Japan Self-Defense Forces, combined with extensive study of body mechanics and character theory, clearly informs the work. Even in this first volume, the musculature, joint movements, and stances feel meticulously observed. While the physiques are deliberately exaggerated for dramatic effect — bulging muscles, veined forearms, and powerful frames that border on superhuman — the underlying structure demonstrates a strong understanding of real-world anatomy. This attention to detail makes the action sequences not only exciting but also strangely convincing within the heightened world of Baki.
The larger page size and premium presentation of the Perfect Edition further enhance these qualities, allowing readers to better appreciate the fine linework, motion effects, and kinetic energy that define Itagaki’s style.
BAKI THE GRAPPLER The Perfect Edition Volume One, is available now in print at your local book store or e-retailer such as Amazon. It is also available digitally. The perfect story for new readers, and classic fans of the Baki Franchise.
