Black Jack (ブラック・ジャック) is the iconic medical drama written and illustrated by the “God of Manga,” Osamu Tezuka. Originally serialized in Weekly Shōnen Champion from 1973 to 1983, the core series comprises over 230 short stories collected into 25 tankōbon volumes. The franchise has since expanded into multiple anime adaptations (including acclaimed OVAs, the 2004–2006 TV series, and Black Jack 21), films, and live-action works. It has also inspired spin-offs and related titles such as Young Black Jack (a prequel), Black Jack Neo, Say Hello to Black Jack, and the 2023 AI-assisted story created for the TEZUKA2023 project celebrating the series’ 50th anniversary. In North America, Viz Media first introduced select stories in the late 1980s/1990s, followed by Vertical Inc.’s acclaimed 17-volume English edition (2008–2011) in unflipped format, with the first three volumes featuring rare bonus stories. Black Jack is considered to be one of the greatest manga of all time, including among Tezuka’s best manga alongside Jungle Emperor Leo, Astro Boy, and Phoenix.

This is a medical drama about a genius but unlicensed surgeon by the name of Black Jack.

Black Jack is a genius surgeon who miraculously saves patients’ life no matter how seriously ill they are. He is also known that he charges huge fees as the compensations. On the other hand, the medical society refuses to admit him as a doctor. They even deny his existence. Black Jack practices quietly at his small clinic located in the deserted land together with his assistant Pinoko, who he voluntarily saved before. Yet patients diagnosed helpless by other doctors visit him with a slightest hope.
