Fresh off his breakout animated debut in The Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie, Fox McCloud is blasting back to video games. In a surprise Star Fox Direct, Shigeru Miyamoto and Yoshiaki Koizumi unveiled the first look at Star Fox for the Nintendo Switch 2 — the franchise’s biggest return in over a decade.

During the Star Fox Direct, Shigeru Miyamoto and Yoshiaki Koizumi revealed that the new game is a full remake of the classic Star Fox 64, originally released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997. The team has delivered a significant graphical overhaul tailored for the Nintendo Switch 2, while preserving the original’s signature on-rails shooter gameplay and branching mission routes. Fox McCloud, Peppy Hare, Slippy Toad, and Falco Lombardi feature more realistic and detailed animal designs than ever before, supported by newly added cutscenes, all while remaining faithful to the core design and spirit of the 1997 classic.

Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2 introduces several notable new features, including online multiplayer and a brand-new 4v4 Dogfight battle mode. The game supports up to four-player local multiplayer via GameShare and online matches through GameChat. It also adds cooperative gameplay, allowing one player to pilot an Arwing or other vehicles while a second player serves as gunner using Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for precise aiming and shooting. The new Star Fox game is scheduled to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25, although Nintendo has not yet revealed pricing or pre-order information. Takaya Imamura, who previously served as Art Director for the Star Fox series, expressed his excitement for the project on social media, sharing his gratitude to Shigeru Miyamoto.

“It was a remake of ‘Star Fox 64’, right! I’m very proud! Thank you, Miyamoto-san! …this isn’t a dream, right?”

Star Fox (スターフォックス) is a critically acclaimed rail shooter and space combat series created by Shigeru Miyamoto, with character designs and art direction by Takaya Imamura. Launched in 1993, the original Star Fox was developed by Nintendo EAD in collaboration with Argonaut Software. It utilized the groundbreaking Super FX chip to deliver one of the first hardware-accelerated 3D graphics experiences on a home console. The series achieved massive popularity with its 1997 reboot, Star Fox 64, which introduced force feedback support on the Nintendo 64. Over the years, Star Fox has expanded into multiple spin-off titles, crossover appearances in other Nintendo games, comic strips, and manga. The franchise made its animated debut in the 14-minute short film Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins, followed by a full appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie.
