If you’re a fan of narrative podcasts and dramas, then today is your lucky day! Tech Raptor has announced that Critical Role’s developmental and production company Metapigeon has acquired the narrative podcast called MIDST.
Now, you might be asking yourself, What is MIDST? Midst is a semi-improvised audio drama that already has two seasons under its belt, with a third one already on the way. Critical Role has already expanded multiple times into their Publishing Branch, Darrington Press, creating board games such as Uk’otoa and Till the Last Grasp. And they branched out into animation as well, that includes the first two seasons of The Legends of Vox Machina, available to watch on Amazon Prime, and a new series on the way titled The Mighty Nein. This was the first time that Metapigeon has purchased an existing entertainment IP and bought it under their umbrella.
The podcast features three unknown narrators who run it, and it isn’t an in-universe thing as the narrators are not known to the public. They are described as unreliable and playfully omniscient narrators who are telling a story that features three protagonists that live in the space-western town of Stationary Hill on the Isle of Midst. Here is a description of each character: one is a crotchety outlaw, another is a struggling cultist, and the other is a diabolical bastard.
It may not be your typical role-playing game that fans have come to expect, but its distinctive audio lends it closely to this genre. While the anonymous narrators voice all of the action taking place on Midst, they perform all of the characters interchangeably and even break the fourth wall to talk directly to the listener.
What does it mean for current listeners of MIDST? This will possibly lead to the re-release of two seasons under the Critical Role banner with remastered audio and video of each video, featuring original art pieces of art from the following artists: Ricardo Bessa, Lenka Simeckova, Sam Bosma, Artem Chebokha, Lap Pun Cheung, and Will Kirkby.
In lieu of the trumpet and explosion emojis that would be the truest expression of our feelings, we can say with full sincerity that we are over the moon to have found partners with such phenomenal passion and talent for creative multimedia storytelling. Critical Role and Metapigeon are enabling us to bring Midst to life in ways we never imagined possible, and we can’t wait to share what’s in store with fans both old and new.
MIDST Statement
The first three remastered episodes of MIDST will be released for free on Critical Roles’ YouTube Channel on April 11th, 12th, and 13th. They will also be available on podcast apps such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts. After that, it will be available every Wednesday at 5 pm pacific. Those who subscribe via the Midst website will be able to get future episodes two weeks early and other bonuses such as additional documents and items from the world of Midst.
