I can’t believe I’m writing an article about this. And that it has gotten this bad, but today, we’re going to be looking at the newest controversy that has gripped social media and news networks. Was it addressing the apparent normalization of gun violence? The normalization of Political and Health Misinformation? No, it is over candy. The commotion is over M&M Chocolate Candy and their recent marketing campaign.
Yes, there is another culture war in our midst, and it involves Junk Food. Last year, M&M’s made headlines with their announcement regarding a redesign of their Spokes Candy. The redesign would include the most notable change, giving the Green M&M’s sneakers instead of Go-Go Boots.
Now, One Year Later, the brand’s parent company, MARS would announce that the iconic candy characters, each a different color, would now be put on indefinite pause, and a new human spokesperson would be introduced. The company would introduce actress Maya Rudolph as its new spokesperson to be the power of fun’s Champion to help create a world where everyone feels like they belong.
How did a fun treat become another object of polarization?
In January 1997, the brand’s parent company, MARS was heavily criticized for the sexual characterization of one of their SpokesCandy, the Green M&M. When the candies would get their redesigns, the green one would not only get new shoes but would also see the green and brown M&M becoming friendlier with each other.
Despite the brand’s good intentions, M&M’s has continued to face critcizations, especially from Tucker Carlson, one of Fox News’s Television Hosts who has been known for his outlandish rants about Pop Culture and focusing on marketing campaigns that he deems a Threat to America, or promoting Woke Culture. In January 2022, he would go on an unhinged rant that M&M Candies became less sexy and let out a strange claim:
“M&M’s will not be satisfied until every last cartoon character is deeply unappealing and totally androgynous. Until the moment you wouldn’t want to have a drink with any one of them. That’s the goal. When you’re totally turned off, we’ve achieved equality…“

The rants and complaints would not stop from there, for example, Nick Adams. If you’re not familiar with him, he is an author endorsed by Former President Donald Trump and a self-proclaimed Alpha Male who took to Twitter and released a video message demanding the brand’s parent company issue a formal complaint and release an all-male package of M&M’s to demonstrate their commitment to gender equality.
Tucker Carlson gleefully took credit for M&M’s indefinite pause of their spokes candies, releasing a statement on his show while remarking they were obese and lesbian spokes candies. Still clinging to his odd attraction to candy-coated chocolate.

The point I’m trying to make is, IT IS CANDY. There is no point in getting upset over junk food. At the end of the day, your stomach doesn’t care what political party it is with or what its views are supposed to be. All that matters to it is that it fills the purpose of something to tie you over temporarily until mealtime.
