The First Slam Dunk Tops Avatar: The Way of Water In Its Third Weekend

Shohoku High has faced larger-than-life moments on the court, and what better opponent than James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water? The Opposing Team had a successful box-office weekend around the world, but it was the home team, The First Slam Dunk that won the box-office battle in its Third Weekend.

According to Crunchyroll, Avatar took third place, with Makato Shinkai’s Suzume in second place. With Avatar mostly being watched in premium formats, its box office takings were higher than Suzume.

The First Slam Dunk passed 4 Billion Yen in total box office gross during the weekend, with a total of 4.18 Billion Yen ($30.65 Million US Dollars) with 2.81 million tickets sold. It is safe to say that it is the highest-grossing film in the Slam Dunk Franchise, capping off a very successful year for Toei Animation.

Toei Animation and DandeLion Animation Studio are animating the movie. Original mangaka Takehiko Inoue is directing the movie and writing the screenplay. Yasuyuki Ebara is doing character designs and also serving as chief animation director. The series is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.

This iconic Sports Manga ran in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1990 to 1996 for a total of 31 volumes. The manga inspired a television anime in 1993 and had four anime film sequels. Viz Media released all 31 volumes of the manga in English.
