Time certainly flies when you’re having fun, it would seem. It feels like only yesterday when I wrote a review for the first Sonic Film. Now two years later, I’m writing a review for Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Sonic (Ben Schwartz) is back for another adventure with his new family, Green Hill’s Sheriff, Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), and his wife, Maddie Wachowski (Tika Sumpter) who decides to go to Hawaii for a wedding for her sister, Rachel (Natasha Rothwell). For months, everything seemed peaceful until Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), returned to earth after being stranded in Outer Space. But Robotnik wasn’t alone, joining him was the last survivor of the Echidnas, Knuckles (Idris Elba), who was on a quest to avenge his tribe and retrieve the Master Emerald.

Luckily, Sonic isn’t alone in his battle to protect the earth, he is joined by a two-tailed fox named Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), who idolizes him and came to earth to warn Sonic about Knuckles.

Taking off where its predecessor left off, it is still trying to find its footing, but there is evidence that it is bringing more of the SEGA Sonic Universe into it. You may recall, in the first Sonic Movie, there were countless easter eggs jammed into it, but this also served in laying down the groundwork and how Sonic would fit into the world, director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington were allowed to go nuts and go crazy with working in notes from the entertainments, and it was successful. The best thing about this movie was whenever Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles were on the screen it captured the spirit of these characters perfectly.

Longtime voice actress, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, got the chance to reprise her role as everyone’s favorite two-tailed kitsune for the big screen, a smart move, Collen brought everything to the table when it came to portraying him, a sweet, kind kid who risked everything to help his new friend.

The chemistry between Tails and Sonic, (again, voiced by Schwartz) was the emotional highlight of this film, this allowed for more character development for the blue hedgehog, it was a callback to not only the video games, comic book series (both Archie and IDW,) but the classic cartoon series, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic the Hedgehog (the Saturday Morning Series.)

Stepping up to the plate as Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba, an awesome choice to portray this tough character, there were times during the movie that Knuckles shared the same demeanor as Dave Bautista’s Drax the Destroyer from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The strangest duo in the movie was Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik, with the doctor losing his marbles and Knuckles’ Self-Serious nature, it was a perfect comedic pairing, one of the best moments from the movie.

It was teased that Carrey was considering retiring from acting, but Carrey brought all of it for Robotnik’s madness yet was still menacing, If this was his last role before retiring then it feels fitting that it’s possibly the most Jim Carrey of all his performances.

Aside from all of that, I can’t leave out James Marsden and the others, he and Tika Sumpter did a great job in this movie, taking Sonic in and adopting him was a sweet gesture because even though he has this power, and super speed he is still a kid who surprisingly compares himself to Batman but is more of a Peter Parker/Spider-Man type of hero “With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility.”

Aside from the action, the comedy was good in this sequel, Maddie’s Sister, Rachel was one of the funniest characters aside from the Bridezilla moments. It was clear to see that Natasha Rothwell brought her A-Game, along with Stone (played by Lee Majdoub) who was both comedic and fierce when it came down to it.

Final Grade:

Rating: 8 out of 10.
