Ah, Romance, one of the unique experiences in life unless you add a bit of time travel and body switching to the mix. Today’s review will be about one of the biggest and most-talked about anime films, Your Name. Written and Directed by Makoto Shinkai, Your Name is a Romantic Fantasy film about a high school boy that lives in Tokyo and a high school girl that lives in a rural town, suddenly one day the two wake up to find that they inexplicably begin to swap bodies. Your Name was a commercial success, with making $358 million and becoming the highest-grossing anime film, Japanese film of all-time, and various other accomplishments that it rightfully deserves, the animation was produced by CoMix Wave Films, CoMix is known for films such as 5 Centimeters Per Second, Flavors of Youth, and the recent film that fans have made some comparisons to Your Name, Weathering with you.
As mentioned, Your Name follows a boy named Taki Tachibana, he is a 17-year-old who goes to Tokyo Metropolitan High School and was picking up shifts as a Waiter in his spare time whereas Mitsuha Miyamizu is in her second year of high school (Fun Fact, Mitsuha is three years older than Taki) and lives in a fictional town in the mountains, where she maintains the family shrine and dreams of life in the big city. The film using the concept of the body-switching and uses it to portray life as a girl being raised in Rural Japan, while also portraying life as a boy in Tokyo. While it gives fans sweet memories of Ranma 1/2 and movies such as Freaky Friday, the primary focus of the film is on Mitsuha and her push between modernity and traditionalism, with it being a film about teenagers, it also is about the burden of adulthood for a young lady who is expected to be in the present, but also expected to have her foot in the past.
Makoto Shinkai’s focus mainly is on empathy and communication, ways of understanding each other, and the ways that we cannot. Like for example, when Mitsuha set up Taki for a date and Taki helping Mitsuha stand up to the girls who bullied her, we find ourselves watching their relationship grow deeper as they become more familiar with each other; with romance, there are elements of comedy too, Taki trying to get a grasp of what he has lost and gained in the body swap, Mitsuha.. Well, realizing that she has lost several things and gained something when becoming Taki for a day (I’m not going into detail, but you get the gist of it.) Shinkai’s film and story are one of the best examples of how to do a romantic film for not only teenagers but for all fans of either Anime or Movies in general. The animation studio CoMix Wave Films and their talented staff did a wonderful job in bringing Your Name to life, the extensive research for both the studio and director they did to bring this story to life is inspiring for writers and artists (in my opinion,) goes to show why the film and the team behind it deserved the praise it got.Looking to preorder the Your Name.
