He helped forge one of the most iconic sports manga in history — a raw, unforgettable cultural phenomenon that still echoes through pop culture decades later. Tetsuya Chiba, co-creator and illustrator of the legendary series, Ashita no Joe, passed away on October 22 at the age of 87, due to a myelodysplastic syndrome, a type of cancer that affects the blood cells in the bone marrow.
As the news spread, fellow manga creators and major publishers including Kodansha, Shogakukan, and Shueisha rose to pay tribute, honoring the man whose work burned so brightly it left pure white ash in its wake — and a lasting mark on the entire industry. The Japanese Cartoonist Association, where Chiba had served as the chairman said he had made major contributions to the promotion of manga, creative activity and the status of manga artists. A private funeral was held with close family members.
