Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil made its debut on Friday, bringing in $26.3 million and clawing its way into the No. 1 spot at the box office. Early reports now show the horror film bringing in $60.1 million in its three-day opening weekend.
The second reboot of this 90s classic survival horror game is doing well in theaters, ticket sales are surpassing expectations and registering as the largest debut in the 24-year-old horror franchise. Previously 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife with Milla Jovovich ranked as the largest opening in the series with $26 million (not adjusted for inflation). Resident Evil also collected $48.3 million internationally for a global start of $108.3 million, an important reminder that the film’s budget was $75 million.
Pre-release projections were tracking a domestic debut around $40 million to $50 million, with some estimates showing it would open to a franchise-best $80 million worldwide. Sony has enjoyed strong success with September releases recently. Last year, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle (Part One) opened to $70.6 million, ranking as the sixth-best September debut of all time. Resident Evil’s $60 million opening now claims the seventh spot, ahead of 2018’s The Nun ($53.8 million).
It is the best-reviewed Resident Evil film in the franchise’s 24-year history, holding a 97% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes—far surpassing the largely negative scores of previous entries. As of right now, it has surpassed the global debut of Cregger’s Weapons ($70 million), and Barbarian (around $10–12 million domestic).
Zach Cregger is directing the new Resident Evil film from a script he co-wrote with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4). Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the project. The cast includes Austin Abrams in the lead role, alongside Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. The producing team features Robert Kulzer, Zach Cregger, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Carter Swan, and Asad Qizilbash, with executive producers Oliver Berben, Victor Hadida, Richard Wright, and Robert Bernacchi.
