DC Studios revealed its first teaser trailer for Supergirl, her very first film in 41 years. It was first revealed during a private Manhattan preview party hosted by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, director Craig Gillespie, and star Milly Alcock. The new trailer made it very clear how Alcock’s approach to Kara Zor-el/ Supergirl will stand apart from her optimistic cousin, Superman.

As the trailer shows, this will be a vastly different approach to an iconic hero such as Supergirl, one that is struggling with inner demons. Another similarity that has been pointed out was that this looks similar to Gunn’s other film trilogy from Marvel Studios, Guardians of the Galaxy when it comes to Alcock’s Supergirl moving through intergalactic colonies populated by questionable humanoid aliens. Another familiar face that will be making their movie debut is Lobo, who is portrayed by Jason Momoa. Joining Mily Alcock and Jason Momoa will be Matthias Schoenaerts (“The Old Guard”), who plays the lead villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley (“3 Body Problem”) as Ruthye Marye Knoll, a girl who recruits Supergirl to bring Krem to justice for killing her father; and David Krumholtz (“Oppenheimer”) and Emily Beecham (“Cruella”) as Supergirl’s parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze. David Corenswet will be reprising his role as Kara’s cousin Kal-El / Superman alongside her super-powered dog Krypto.
The film will be directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Fright Night, Cruella), and writer Bilquis Evely handling the screenplay for the film, which will adapt the Eisner Award-Winning Limited series, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which was written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. Supergirl is produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran, speaking of Gunn, he addressed whether the big Warner Bros films like Supergirl would continue to play in theaters when acquired by Netflix, saying “This is a story-based medium, we want stories to be in theaters that are cool and different from each other, this movie is not just a female clone of Superman. It’s its own thing entirely with a character who is equally worthy of this treatment.” The Movie is set to debut in theaters on June 26th, 2026.
While Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created Superman, Superman’s Cousin, Supergirl was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino. She made her debut in the story, “The Supergirl from Krypton” in Action Comics #252 (May 1959), and since her comic book debut, Supergirl has been the star of her own title series and appeared in numerous DC books. Kara Zor-el has also made other appearances in animated shows and animated films such as Superman The Animated Series, Batman The Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, DC Superhero Girls, and My Adventures with Superman. As for live-action adaptations, she was the star of her first film in 1984, a cameo appearance in the 2023 film, The Flash. Finally, her appearances in television shows include Smallville, and the CW’s Supergirl. Lobo was created by writer Roger Slifer, and artist Keith Giffen. The character made his debut in DC’s OMEGA MEN Issue No. 3 (June 1983), and would get his own title series in 1990, eventually making appearances in other DC Titles over the years. Lobo has made appearances in television media such as Superman The Animated Series, Young Justice, and the second season of the live-action TV series, Krypton. Both Supergirl and Lobo have made cameo appearances in DC Video Games as well.
