The weekend was certainly filled with Sci-Fi fun, paranormal mischief, and of course, another Box Office Flop for Warner Bros Discovery and DC. But the main focus was the anime adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s One-Shot Manga, Look Back, which earned over $1 Million during its opening weekend in the U.S.

In a new Box Office Report from The Numbers and Box Office MOJO, Look Back earned an estimated $688,253 at the U.S. box office over the weekend. The film screened across 535 theaters. It has jumped around between ranks of 24 to 25 during the weekend, but The latest numbers for October 7 showed that it earned around $548,695, confirming that the film has crossed the million-dollar threshold at $1,238,024 and reached rank #4.

The International Gross of the film is estimated to bring in $9,789,555, bringing the worldwide gross to about $11,027,579. GKIDS screened the film in New York and Los Angeles on October 4, then offered more screenings in North America, while confirming that it will offer more additional screenings that include Canada. Since its debut in Japan, it has opened on 119 screens and quickly climbed over 1 billion yen at the box office in the first two weeks. Due to popular demand, the film remained in theaters and has since expanded its Japanese domestic run. Look Back has earned praise from Studio Ghibli’s Chairman and Co-Founder, Toshio Suzuki.

Kiyotaka Oshiyama (The Wind Rises, Deca Dance, The Boy, and The Heron) took on the role of the Director, the screenplay, and character design. Studio Durian handled the animation production. Look Back was one of the most emotional stories in the current era of Shonen manga. It has been described as a love letter to the manga industry and was released on the second anniversary of the Kyoto Animation Arson Incident. In July 2021, the one-shot title became Shueisha’s most popular One-Shot in its history, reaching over 4 million reads on the digital manga platform (Shonen Jump Plus) in just two days in Japan. The manga won the first Rakuten Kobo E-book Awards in May 2023, and it ranked #1 in the 2022 edition of Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (This Manga Is Amazing!) guidebook. It was also nominated for last year’s Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards and was second place at the 15th Manga Taisho Awards.

The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.
