The First Slam Dunk Prepares For US Netflix Premiere Later This Month!

Let’s Go Shohoku High!” The rallying cry of Slam Dunk fans far and wide, but our favorite high school basketball team is taking the game to a streaming service. No, unfortunately, we aren’t going to ESPN Plus, but we’re going to Netflix! The First Slam Dunk has been confirmed to be released in the United States exclusively on August 25.

This film included a story that wasn’t released in the original manga according to Comic Book, the film was also released on Netflix in Japan with a special confirmation from Takehiko Inoue that a revival screening will be taking place over 300 theaters across Japan starting on August 13. The First Slam Dunk was first released on December 3, 2022, earning 15.73 billion yen (US$117.35 million) during its long run, becoming the 7th highest-grossing anime film of all time in its home country. In March 2023, it won the prestigious Animation of The Year Award at the 46th Annual Japan Academy Film Prize Awards. The film also made its debut in North America in July 2023, raking in over $600k, and debuted in the top fifteen at No. 11.

Revival Screening PV

Toei Animation and DandeLion Animation Studio handled the animation for the movie, with Takehiko Inoue in charge of directing the film and screenplay. Yasuyuki Ebara handled the character designs and also served as chief animation director. This iconic Sports Manga ran in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1990 to 1996 for a total of 31 volumes. The manga inspired a television anime in 1993 and had four anime film sequels. Viz Media released all 31 volumes of the manga in English. You can catch the series now on Crunchyroll and YouTube. The First Slam Dunk is available now on Blu-Ray, thanks to GKIDS.
