The anime film based on Chainsaw Man Creator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s iconic one-shot manga Look Back. The film has accomplished a lot in its short time at the box office, surpassing 1 Billion Yen (US $6.41 million) at the box office, selling over 600,000 tickets, and now getting praise from one of the biggest names in both the animation and anime industry, Studio Ghibli’s Chairman and Co-Founder, Toshio Suzuki.
For whom is the work for? The answer lies within the film.

But he wasn’t the only one praising the film, acclaimed artist Yoshitomo Nara, who was moved by the film, saying “I was so moved by the manga it brought me to tears, but when I heard the characters’ voices in the film, with their unique and realistic tones, my heart was moved again and I found myself moved to tears once more.”

Also confirmed recently, a brand-new batch of theatrical gifts (8 total) of original animation over two sheets that can be turned into postcards for each frame. These items will be available to attendees on July 26, one month after the film made its debut in theaters. These Items will be available for a limited time.
Kiyotaka Oshiyama (The Wind Rises, Deca Dance, The Boy, and The Heron) took on the role of the Director, the screenplay, and character design. Studio Durian handled the animation production. Look Back was one of the most emotional stories in the current era of Shonen manga. It has been described as a love letter to the manga industry and was released on the second anniversary of the Kyoto Animation Arson Incident. In July 2021, the one-shot title became Shueisha’s most popular One-Shot in its history, reaching over 4 million reads on the digital manga platform (Shonen Jump Plus) in just two days in Japan. The manga won the first Rakuten Kobo E-book Awards in May 2023, and it ranked at #1 in the 2022 edition of Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (This Manga Is Amazing!) guidebook. It was also nominated for last year’s Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, and was second place at the 15th Manga Taisho awards.
Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back is available now where books are sold (both digital and in print), and also available to read on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump Plus and Manga Plus apps. Viz Media published the title for English audiences and is available to read on the Shonen Jump app.
The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.
