Despite reports that the Kyoto Animation Arsonist’s trial would conclude this year, the Kyoto District Court announced that the arsonist’s verdict will be delivered on January 25th, 2024. It would finally end the trial that has been ongoing since the day of the attack in July 2019.
Along with the verdict date, the court also revealed that this would be the first time he would face the court the first time on September 5th, after going through two rounds of Psych Evaluations to see if he was fit to stand trial since he was arrested in May 2020. The first one from the prosecutor’s side and the other from the defense. With both sides concluding that the trial can continue.
The arsonist was caught at the scene, suffering heavy burns all over his body, and has been charged with murder, attempted murder, arson, breaking and entering, and violating the firearms and sword control law by the Kyoto District Public Prosecutor’s Office. The Arson attack occurred on July 18th, 2019, 36 Studio employees perished in the attack, which included Yasuhiro Takemoto, Director of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, Legendary Animator and Mentor Yoshiji Kigami, and other talented, brilliant people, who worked hard and creativity touched the lives of people around the world. 35 people were also injured.
