The First Slam Dunk Continues Its First Place Streak, Fending Off James Cameron’s Avatar Sequel Once Again

That Basketball Genius, Hanamichi Sakuragi, and his teammates continue to show the world their amazing Basketball skills for their fourth weekend in a row at No. 1, shutting out James Cameron’s Avatar Sequel once again at the Japanese Box Office.

In its fourth weekend in a row, The First Slam Dunk has continued its stay at number one at the Japanese Box Office, passing 5 Billion Yen this weekend on 2.81 million admissions according to the latest box office numbers.

Meanwhile, James Cameron’s latest Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, had another successful weekend in North America despite the winter weather. In Japan, however, it was a different story. The Way of Water stuck to Number Three with 1.44 Billion Yen. Toei Animation continues its impressive Box Office Streak for 2022, making The First Slam Dunk the first big blockbuster of the new Japanese box office year, which runs from December 2022 to November 2023.

Toei Animation and DandeLion Animation Studio are animating the movie. Original mangaka Takehiko Inoue is directing the movie and writing the screenplay. Yasuyuki Ebara is doing character designs and also serving as chief animation director. The series is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.

The First Slam Dunk is now playing in theaters and IMAX in Japan. This iconic Sports Manga ran in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1990 to 1996 for a total of 31 volumes. The manga inspired a television anime in 1993 and had four anime film sequels. Viz Media released all 31 volumes of the manga in English.
