I know what you’re thinking, “He must be reviewing this because Riri Williams will be in the Wakanda Forever Movie!” No, sorry.
I am trying to catch up on my Comic Book Reviews, and in my opinion, one of the best comic book stories in recent years. Ironheart Volume One: Those with Courage collects Issues One Through Six. She has taken the world by storm, and now she starts with her very own comic series, one of Spider-Man’s old foes has taken a group of world leaders hostage and this has Riri realizing that she needs to step up her game. Her life is turned upside down when an old acquaintance from Chicago re-enters her life! Now Ironheart is caught between her need for independence and her obligations at M.I.T. And now her old friend was kidnapped, and Riri will have to make some tough decisions.
This Comic Series has a great creative team consisting of writer Eve L Ewing and the artistic team of Luciano Vecchio, Kevin Libranda, Geoffeo, and Cowles. What Ewing brought to the table was a well-written story, a new villain, and a great way to re-introduce Riri Williams to newer fans.
What I enjoy most about Riri Williams is that she isn’t a carbon copy of Tony Stark, and she is relatable to a lot of readers. Ewing injects her stories (including this one) with much-needed updates and post-modern reflection. Another important issue this volume tackles is how people process trauma and the importance of mental health and well-being. She is a hero who has been haunted by real-world gun violence, loss, and rebirth.
One of my favorite characters that they have introduced in this volume was her AI which was modeled after her deceased friend, Natalie, who is funny but a great tribute to their friendship. A familiar villain, Midnight’s Fire made his return, well-designed, and a fresh take for the new generation. We learn more about Midnight Fire later on in the volume of his origin story which was brief but simplified for new readers.
In the final part of the review, I would like to discuss the artwork. You have an incredible art team that offers vibrant colors, well-drawn expressions, and of course, plenty of action! Each page offers readers something phenomenal and engaging.
