BELLE Director Mamoru Hosoda Teaches His Creative Secrets On The Latest NHK Academia

Belle Final Visual

Ladies and Gentlemen, you’re in for a treat! In the newest episode of NHK Academia, Director Mamoru Hosoda will be showing fans how he has created anime and will be talking about his workflow and thoughts on the industry at large, as well as taking questions directly from the audience via Zoom.

Another thing Hosoda will be discussing is the first time during his second year he felt that animation production was too hard. That was until he watched Disney’s Beauty and the Beast for the first time and became enamored by it, understanding the potential in animation for amazing expressions and the value of creating works for younger audiences. The original Beauty and the Beast story later became the inspiration behind Hosoda’s BELLE.

If you’re interested in watching this program, it is currently streaming on NHK’s website (in Japanese). The special is set to air on NHK-E at 10:45 PM on July 26th, with a repeat on August 1st.

Belle is available now on Digital, Blu-Ray, and DVD. It is a fantastical, heartfelt story of growing up in the age of social media. Lauded by critics around the globe following its premiere at the 74th Annual Cannes Film Festival and nominated for five Annie Awards including Best Independent Feature.

Suzu is a shy, everyday high school student living in a rural village. For years, she has only been a shadow of herself. But when she enters “U”, a massive virtual world, she escapes into her online persona as Belle, a gorgeous and globally-beloved singer. One day, her concert is interrupted by a monstrous creature chased by vigilantes. As their hunt escalates, Suzu embarks on an emotional and epic quest to uncover the identity of this mysterious “beast” and to discover her true self in a world where you can be anyone.
