As you all know, last weekend was the debut of Evangelion Creator Hideaki Anno and Director Shinji Higuchi’s follow-up film to Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman.
According to the Japanese Film News Website, Eiga, and Crunchyroll’s Japan Correspondent, Daryl Harding, Shin Ultraman brought in 993,410,050 yen (US$7.68 million) on the back of 641,802 tickets sold. This total is more than the total box office of the 2008 Superior Ultraman 8 Brothers film at 838 million yen, which to this point was the highest-grossing Ultra series film in theaters. Shin Ultraman‘s first three-day was also higher than that of the previous tokusatsu “Shin” film helmed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, Shin Godzilla, which made 825 million yen over its first three days in Japanese theaters. There isn’t any other information regarding if the film will be released Internationally.
Shin Ultraman is the second film in Anno’s Shin Japan Heroes Universe, Shin Godzilla was the first film and will continue with the newest film, Shin Kamen Rider in March 2023.
The movie was produced by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno, who also handled the scripts. Shinji Higuchi, who directed the Attack on Titan live-action films, helmed Shin Ultraman along with his Higuchi-Gumi Team.

The continued appearance of giant unidentified lifeforms known as “S-Class Species” has become commonplace in Japan.
Conventional weapons have no effect on them. Having exhausted all other options, the Japanese Government issued the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol and formed an enforcement unit, known as the SSSP.
The members chosen for the unit are: Leader Fumio Tamura (played by Hidetoshi Nishijima), Executive Strategist Shinji Kaminaga (played by Takumi Saitoh), Unparticle Physicist Taki Akihisa (played by Daiki Arioka), and Universal Biologist Yume Funaberi (Akari Hayami)
As the threat of S-Class Species worsens, a silver giant appears from beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
Analyst Hiroko Asami (played by Masami Nagasawa) is newly appointed to the SSSP to deal with this giant and is partnered with Shinji Kaminaga.
In Hiroko’s report, she writes… “Ultraman (tentative name), identity unknown”.
