*Before this review begins, I would like to please note that there will be Spoilers.*
April 2nd was the premiere of episode one of SSSS. Dynazenon, it has been three years since SSSS. Gridman premiered and fans have been looking for something to fill that void, and now we have it. SSSS. Dynazenon is the sequel of SSSS. Gridman, which is part of the Gridman Universe which was established with the series from the 90s, Gridman the Hyper Agent.
Today’s review is all about the first episode “What is a Kaiju User?” The first half of the episode gives us Character Building, the ones that give viewers a first look at the characters that we’ll be getting familiar with during the season. Let’s run you up to speed on what this series is about too, so our story begins with a student named Yomogi Asanaka, his first year at Fujiyokidai High and has an after-school job meets a man named Gauma who claims to be a “Kaiju User” but he shrugged Gauma off thinking he was just some weirdo until a Kaiju appears and immediately begins to attack the city! After the appearance of the Kaiju sparks the appearance of a Giant Mecha Robot, Dynazenon, and catches Asanaka, Yume Minami, Koyomi Yamanaka, and Chise Asukagawa up in a battle with the Kaiju!
As mentioned before it does include character-building moments, for example, we learned that Yomogi Asanaka is a first-year and has an after-school job, he has qualities that we’ve seen in the previous Trigger shows in past such as Generosity, kindness (I say this because of his offering to Guana at the beginning, he claimed to be “dying” and Asanaka offered him something to eat.) While Yume Minami acts mysterious, claiming that there is “something wrong with me” twice while standing up her dates. We learn also that there is more to her than meets the eye. I’ll be honest with you, it is a great time to be a Kaiju Fan and Giant Mecha Fan because not only you have the Newest Kaiju Film, Godzilla vs. Kong in theaters and on HBO Max that premiered on March 31st, but now you have SSSS. Dynazenon premiered on April 2nd.
Director Akira Amemiya and Episode Director Yoshiyuki Kaneko have done a great job on this episode, the reference to Transformers was a delicious treat to watch the giant robot transform from a Giant Robot to a Fire Breathing Dyna Rex! The Kaiju fight was beautifully animated and one of the best things about the episode, the art and animation team at Trigger Inc. did a great job on this episode, it will be great to see the Gridman Universe starting to form more fully. But wait, is there a meaning behind the “SSSS“? Good Question! If you recall in SSSS. Gridman, it meant “SPECIAL SIGNATURE TO SAVE A SOUL” but its a different case for SSSS. Dynazenon and that was “SCARRED SOULS SHINE like STARS“.
