Another Bookscans update for January (1/03/2021 to 1/31/2021) according to ICv2’s Bridget Alverson. This time showing more variety on the Charts for the following categories: Authors, Manga, and Superheroes Graphic Novels.

Beginning with the Author’s chart we have the Graphic Novel Memoir of George Takei’s They Called Us Enemy taking the Number One spot, with the former congressman John Lewis’s Graphic Novel March: Book One coming in at Number Two. Making its debut was the new release from Eisner Award-Winning Writer David F. Walker’s The Rise of the Black Panther Party debuting at Number 20. Another new release from December that didn’t make its debut last month was no on the Bookscan chart is Z2’s Gorillaz: Almanac, debuting at Number 10.

Inspired by the great British tradition of the hardback annual, the Gorillaz Almanac is a full colour, one-of-a-kind, fun-packed, 200 pages, a sideways homage to two glorious decades of Gorillaz. Jammed with exclusive new artwork, including the first-ever strip to star 2D and Murdoc Niccals; puzzles, games, and more; plus a raft of special guest appearances from Gorillaz collaborators past and present, the Gorillaz Almanac is a compendium of delights which finally puts the most real band around on the printed page.”

Next up is the Manga Section, if you recall the Previous Bookscan chart for January. There wasn’t any change except for one minor thing, it was My Hero Academia Vol.5. It replaced volume two of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, a clear indication that readers are not only picking up but also sampling too.

Finally, is the Superheroes Graphic Novel Chart. The only 2021 release that made it on the chart this time was Marvel’s The Uncanny X-Men Omnibus at Number 11. The previous months have leaned toward DC, mostly Batman titles. But also Vision (due to the popularity of WandaVision I am assuming,) Harleen, and Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, including several Star Wars titles and the Abrams collection of Marvel Comics Mini-Books.
