Announced today at DC Comics’ official website, Brian Azzarello (Wonder Woman (New 52), Batman: The Dark Knight III, Batman: Damned) will be the writer of the new Birds of Prey series and he isn’t alone! With the artistic team Emanuela Lupacchino (Wonder Woman: Rebirth, Green Lantern: Rebirth, John Carter: Warlord of Mars), Ray McCarthy (Supergirl (new 52), Red Robin, Adventures of Superman), and Trish Mulhivill (Wonder Woman, 100 Bullets, Hellblazer).

Bringing together Black Canary, Huntress, and Harley Quinn (Sounds like an odd combination but hey, I’m game!) for a new iteration of the all-female super-team but they will be going into the depths of hell when an ‘Old Flame’ of Black Canary gets him and her caught up in a battle with the red hot gang called La Esposas De La Muerte, Harley joins the gang after returning to Gotham from a stint with the Suicide Squad; meanwhile, the Huntress will be involved due to urging from Renee Montoya, which will have a supporting role in the story. Now here are statements from the team!

“I’m thrilled to work on Birds of Prey with Brian Azzarello, The Birds are a super-team I’ve never worked on before but that I‘ve always loved. Harley is shining with her craziness, which is something I love to draw. The story is great, We’re introducing interesting, energetic new characters and have developed designs for their costumes that will instantly give fans an idea about their nature. It’ll be a fantastic run. This will be a lovely opportunity to bring these women to life and let the reader feel their emotions. I’ll give them their energy and power.”

Emanuela Lupacchino

“It’s cool to have a story to tell about these characters I’ve never worked on before, with Ema, a terrific artist I’ve never worked with before, amic—hell, with every dynamic. She’s chaos, but she might be the most together member of the team. Canary, Huntress, and Montoya have a lot of damaged baggage. Ema and I are gonna unpack it, Tonally, this series will surprise many readers, Ema and I are pushing the envelope, both character-wise and plot-wise, with equal parts estrogen and adrenaline. Our BOP will be the must-read title every month. Ambitious? Sure. That’s why it’s worth doing.”

Brian Azzarello
