Trainers, You have seen the Direct, now let’s discuss what we learned.
Today was a tremendous day for Pokemon Fans and Trainers, we were greeted by Tsunekazu Ishihara, The President, and CEO of The Pokemon Company who introduced us to new footage for Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. From new pokemon, New trainers, New professor and of course new Multiplayer action!
Like in the past Pokemon games, you can choose between three Pokemon. It’ll be tough, because they are super adorable.
- Sobble- The new Water starter that comes off as a sad little lizard but it is surprised when he was chosen.
- Grookey- The new Grass starter who is a curious chimp-like Pokemon. (Trying to resist the urge to nickname this Pokemon ‘Curious George’!~Red)
- Scorbunny- Our new fire starter, energetic, a fire type! (Could be nicknamed ‘Officer Hopps‘ Easily~Red)
But for now, we do not know about their secondary types, evolutions or move sets but we’ll learn more in the future, maybe at e3 is a possibility.
The New Region: Galar
It resembles the United Kingdom when turned upside down, in February we got to see various areas in the region; from the farmlands, small towns leading to the woodlands up to a breakaway of Large Cities. But what’s interesting here is that the first time it was shown in the February Direct and one of the Commercial Cities shown has a Steam Punk feel to it with gears, pulleys, and other mechanisms prominently shown on the outsides of buildings. The design of the commercial areas resembles the Industrial Revolution, a tall clock tower that resembles Big Ben, an attraction that resembles the London Eye.
“An expansive region with diverse environments — an idyllic countryside, contemporary cities, thick forest, and craggy, snow-covered mountains. The people and the Pokemon who live there work together closely to develop the industries in the region. Fans will have the opportunity to visit various Gyms in the Galar region in their quest to become Champion.”The Pokemon Company’s Official Description
Pokemon Sword and Shield will offer players a traditional RPG experience, we saw the random battles return, something that was missed when the Let’s Go video game substituted this with the Pokemon Go’s minigamesque Catch style system. Thanks to the Switch’s hardware, the Battle Animation has become smoother, having more moving parts. As you can see in the screenshot above, the traditional third-person view; we’ll be seeing this implemented in Sword And Shield, when walking through the towns, ground railways but now in this new video game, we see the Camera follow behind the trainer but you won’t be seeing the world from this angle instead, the angle switches to an isometric overhead view; something we’ve gotten used to in the franchise.
Now, let’s discuss the “Wild Areas”, in certain areas in the game the camera will switch viewpoints; switching to a third-person perspective that is rotatable, the pokemon that you find or encounter will vary in certain locations.
Another thing we’ll be seeing in the new game is Max Raid Battles, Four Player fight against a giant Pokemon. This Pokemon has special moves and will stay in the Dynamax form if successful you and the other players can catch it! But, only one player can use their own new Dynamax transformation during the battle.
Coming back to the Sword and Shield games are the Gym Battles if you recall in the Sun and Moon video games the Gym Leaders and badge system was benched, with lieu of the Island Trails. Even though there hasn’t been official confirmation on how many leaders there will be and of course the Elite Four but as you can see above, the Gyms resemble Sports Arenas because they were implemented for Dynamax Pokemon battles.
In the new Direct we got introduced to several new direct, listed below are the ones we’re introduced to:
- Wooloo: A sheep Pokémon, whose wool can be used to craft goods.
- Gossifleur: A flowering Pokémon that has healing properties in its pollen and can evolve into Eldegoss.
- Drednaw: A bite Pokémon that can chew through rock or iron.
- Corviknight: A flying-type Pokémon that can take trainers to any town they have already visited.
Hop: The Pokemon Champ’s brother, who also will be your Character’s Rival in the game.
Leon: The Current Champion of the Galar Region, he is the older brother of your Rival.
Professor Magnolia: Galar’s Professor who is studying the Dynamax Transformations.
Sonia: The professor’s granddaughter and assistant, in tradition she will offer you advice.
As we have mentioned in the Max Raid Battle section, we are introduced to a new way to battle which will be implemented for Gym battles, the Raid Battles. Like Pokemon X and Y, you’ll need a Band to do Dynamax Transformations like Mega Evolution.
Zamazenta: “Zamazenta’s Regal and Majestic movements overwhelm any opponents that dare face it. It’s body is covered in what seems to be a shield.“
Zacian: “Zacian attacks gracefully that its movements can captivate its opponents, it holds what appears to be a sword in its mouth.“
