Mortal Kombat is an American Media franchise that started as a fighting video game series originally developed by Midway Games in 1992. Since the original game’s debut, it has spawned numerous action-adventure games, a comic book series, a card game, films, an animated TV series, and a live-action tour. Mortal Kombat became the best-selling fighting game franchise worldwide with over 100 million copies and one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. With its known reputation for violence, blood, gore, and fatalities, it quickly became one of the most controversial games in Video Game History, which led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) video game rating system. After Midway filed for Bankruptcy, the Mortal Kombat development team was acquired by Warner Bros. Entertainment and re-established as NetherRealm Studios. After it became NetherRealm Studios, the team developed new games, new Comic Book Collaborations, and animated film adaptations. It eventually led to the game franchise being rebooted with Mortal Kombat 1, with Liu Kang as the Fire God and one of Earth’s protectors.

From New Line Cinema comes the latest high-stakes installment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, Mortal Kombat II. This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds-barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.
