STRAIGHT OUT OF THE WARP PIPE! Illumination/Nintendo’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is already shattering records with a massive $34 million Wednesday opening — the best ever for any film launching in April. It has already bested Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary, which rang up a $33.1M Friday/previews — but it’s also the best opening Wednesday in April, beating 2023’s The Super Mario Bros Movie, which brought in $31.7M.

According to Deadline, during the first chapter of its stretch in Easter 2023, it went on to post a 3-day of $146.3M and 5-day of $204.6M, which was an all-time opening for Illumination. Entertainment News Websites including Deadline admits that this will be tricky to forecast, but it sees the sequel directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic legging out to $128.2M over 3 days and $186M over 5 (second best for Illumination). It may look lower, but it is still an awesome feat in box office standards and there is still the possibility that it could shake things up. While the critics weren’t wild for the sequel, Rotten Tomatoes has given it a 91% on the Popcornmeter, citing that its a movie made for the fans.

Time will tell how the sequel will do, especially with it being Easter Weekend and schools being off on Friday, everyone will head to theaters. If it continues its upward trend in the 3-5 day numbers, it would be the biggest 5-Day domestic opening since Moana 2 ($225.4M) and the biggest 3-day opening since Wicked: For Good ($147M).
