The Backlash Continues To Grow Louder As Discord Fails To Assure Its Users

Following up from the announcement from two days ago, Discord continues to face backlash from its recent announcement regarding forcing its users to verify their age by Face Scans or scanning their Government IDs.

Despite trying to reassure its users (which includes VTUBERS, Professional Gamers, Artists, etc) it ended up making things worse. This has driven people to cancel their Nitro Subscriptions, accusing the Company of not only spying on users but also harvesting biometrics and personal data. They have also slammed the new policy, mentioning that it would make it easier to dox people, which users have addressed it in the Discord Post’s Replies and Quotes section on Twitter. Another concern that parents have about the policy is that it has created a safe space for sexual predators.

Digital Freedom Advocates disagreed with Discord’s new policy. The Electronic Frontier Foundation even pointed out in an article from January saying they, and others were against “age-gating and age-verification mandates.” As mentioned previously, since the new rollout was announced, users took to social media and on their individual Discord Servers to voice their complaints and concern in the company’s unpopular move, given that in September 2025, over 70,000 Government Identification Cards were exposed in a Discord User Hack. Cyber Security News reported that the actual number of affected users whose IDs were stolen may be as high as “5.5 million unique users across 8.4 million support tickets.” The company issued a statement after the incident, mentioning that they were working closely with law enforcement and the incident occurred after an unauthorized party compromised one of their third-party vendor platform uses for age-related appeals. Listed below are the new clarifications that have people voicing their distrust in the company, even looking for different programs to use.

Clarifications:

Discord rolled out the same process for the United Kingdom (United Kingdom’s Online Safety Act “OSA”) and Australia (Social Media Minimum Age Act) last year, the company launched a teen-by-default experience in the UK and Australia, and this global rollout builds on that approach to deliver consistent, age-appropriate protections worldwide.

Gamespot recently reached out to Discord for comment, you can click here to read the exclusive. Users have tricked the facial scans by using either GMOD or Death Stranding 2‘s Photo Mode. Discord claims to have covered the workaround, but time will only tell as people continue to find a way to bypass the verification system. Share your thoughts in the comments below.
