It is certainly a big year for Kamen Rider as the series created by the King of Manga, Shotaro Ishinomori celebrates its 55th Anniversary this year, and what better way to celebrate than with a brand-new film starring the second Heisei Rider, Kamen RiderAgito?!
Agito: Chonoryoku Senso (“Agito: Psychic Wars”) was first teased in an announcement on January 16th as part of the Kamen Rider Movie Project, Agito was chosen as the first rider to take part in the new movie project. The cast list so far has been confirmed to include two original members from the television series consisting of Jun Kaname returning as Makoto Hikawa/Kamen Rider G3 and Toshiki Kashu as Shoichi Tsugami/Kamen Rider Agito. They are joined by a reunion of original cast members including Toko Fujita, Jun Yamazaki, Akiyoshi Shibata, Takeshi Masu, Rina Akiyama, Tokimasa Tanabe, and Takanori Higuchi, bringing together a cast lineup that has a deep connection to the original series. The new film heralds a new chapter in the Kamen Rider Franchise with the trailer’s ending mentioning Kamen Rider Chronicle being initiated, suggesting the birth of a new label within the franchise and heightening anticipation for what lies ahead.

For staff, Ryuta Tasaki will be directing the film with a script by Toshiki Inoue and music by Toshihiko Sahashi. It is also based on the Original work by Shotaro Ishinomori. The new film is scheduled to be released in theaters across Japan on April 29th during Golden Week. Throughout its history, Kamen Rider has done numerous things to celebrate the franchise’s anniversary. For example, in its 40th Anniversary celebration, Kamen Rider 1 was released in 2016, starring Hiroshi Fujioka as Takeshi Hongo and Kamen Rider No. 1, with Osamu Kaneda serving as director. For its 50th Anniversary, three projects were unveiled: Kamen Rider: BLACK SUN released in 2022 on Prime Video, starring Hidetoshi Nishijima and Tomoya Nakamura, Shin Kamen Rider released in 2023, directed and written by Hideaki Anno; and finally, Fuuto PI, the animated sequel to Kamen Rider W, which premiered in 2022 on U NEXT, MX, and streams worldwide on Crunchyroll.

A fun fact about Kamen Rider Agito was that it was not only the eleventh installment in the Kamen Rider series, but he was also the second Heisei Era Rider. The series also represented the 30th Anniversary of the Kamen Rider franchise. The series began as a joint-collaboration between Asatsu-DK and Toei, and it was shown on TV Asahi from January 28, 2001, to January 27, 2002. The 2001 series that achieved the highest average television ratings in the Heisei era at 11.7 percent, a record that remains unbroken. Its popularity led to the first theatrical film in the Heisei Kamen Rider era and positioned the series as a major turning point for the franchise. It served as an indirect sequel to Kamen Rider Kuuga, which was set in the same universe. It was the first Kamen Rider series not to have an ending sequence.
