UPDATE: In a new interview with Toei’s Shinichiro Shirakura, the series has been put on a hiatus, citing streaming competition, Western superhero films, and the need for fresh direction after decades of annual series. Also, mentioned that toy revenue dropped sharply after Hasbro’s 2018 Power Rangers acquisition cut Bandai Namco’s global sales, from 21 billion yen to about 8 billion yen domestically.

The moment we were dreading has finally come. TV Asahi has confirmed that the Super Sentai Series will be coming to an end with the current series, No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger, which airs on Sundays at 9:30 am JST on TV Asahi’s Super Hero Time block.

Rumors were already floating around about the possibility of a cancellation involving the end of Super Sentai, but the recent press conference confirmed it. TV Asahi’s President expressed his gratitude to longtime fans of the series for supporting both the series and the network, and explained how Super Sentai’s 50th Anniversary served as the perfect turning point to create new heroes. “This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Super Sentai, and we would like to use this as a turning point to create a new hero. As for Tokusatsu, we would like to continue to provide new series so that people can enjoy them.” He also addressed another topic that has been a really hot topic on social media, the recent firing of Maya Imamori (who issued an apology on her Instagram), and the president apologized for the incident but the company isn’t seeking damages from Imamori for the incident. Finally, as for any possibilities for a future revival involving Super Sentai, there is always a possibility but nothing definitive at this time. A reminder, the Zen Super Sentai Ten (All Super Sentai Exhibition) is being held in Sendai Japan’s Sendai TR Building, open now until January 4, 2026.

ŹToei and TV Asahi have already begun creating a series that would redefine the landscape of Japan’s long-running hero entertainment in 2026 with the newly announced P.R.O.J.E.C.T. RED (Records of Extraordinary Dimensions)! The project’s first installment will be Super Space Sheriff Gavan Infinity, A reimagining of the classic Space Sheriff Gavan series from 1982. The new series will be the first series in 50 years to take Super Sentai’s timeslot.

Fifty years ago on April 5, 1975, the world was introduced to the very first Superhero team in Tokusatsu, Himetsu Sentai Gorenger, thanks to the King of Manga, Shotaro Ishinomori. Fifty years later, Super Sentai is still going strong with the latest installment series, No.1 Sentai Gozyuger. Aside from the television series, Himetsu Sentai Gorenger was adapted into a manga that was written and illustrated by its series creator, Shotaro Ishinomori, which made its serialized debut in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday Magazine from May 4, 1975, to August 17, 1975. It would be forty-five years later when Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the manga outside Japan for North American territories.

North America would get its own adaptation of Super Sentai in the 1990s with the introduction of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from Sabin Entertainment. It was quickly established into popular culture, along with a line of action figures and other toys formerly from Bandai, Hasbro, and now Playmates Toys. The series established its own stories and characters. It ran for 30 seasons, which aired from 1993 to 2023, and it has expanded into other media, including theatrical films, comic books, novels and video games. In April 2025, Toei confirmed that they were not involved in the upcoming Power Rangers Live-Action reboot.
