As you can see in our Featured Image, the Jolly Roger from Eiichiro Oda’s iconic manga series, ONE PIECE has been spotted in last weekend’s “No Kings” protest against Donald Trump and his administration’s outlandish policies in the United States. But the flag has also been spotted in more countries aside from the US, including Madagascar.
There have been pictures of the Jolly Roger featured in Gainesville Florida’s Main St Daily News and mentioned in The Columbus Dispatch, which was pointing out the Flag’s connection to other protests around the world this year, and included the No Kings Protest last weekend. One Piece’s Jolly Roger Flag was spotted in protests in the Eastern African Country of Madagascar since the beginning of the month. Corporate-owned News Media like NBC News have started to notice how Gen Z Protestors are using elements of Anime and Manga in their protests, because despite being set in a world of fantasy and fiction, the struggles that characters face in these stories are similar to what is happening in the real world. What has been happening in Madagascar is that their president has been ousted in a military coup after a week-long uprising by Gen Z protesters, their outrage can be felt across the world today. Here are places that have seen the Jolly Roger Flag flown during protests:

Saturday’s No Kings Protest was the largest yet, according to NPR. Organizers said about 2,600 No Kings events were planned across nearly every state, and that it projected a bigger turnout than the 5 million it said attended its previous nationwide action in June.

One Piece, written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, was first serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine in July 1997, and has been ongoing with its chapters compiled in 112 tankōbon volumes as of July 2025, with the 112th volume releasing on July 4. Since its serialization, the manga has inspired various types of merchandising and media, such as a trading card game and video games. A Television Anime (which is available on Crunchyroll, Netflix, Pluto TV, and Hulu), numerous animated films, and a live-action TV series adaptation on Netflix in 2023, with a Second Season scheduled to premiere in 2026.
