Afterlife with Archie Series In the Works For Disney+

One of the hottest horror titles in recent years is getting a new TV series adaptation at Disney+ according to a new report from Deadline, which is adapted from the 2013 series by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla titled Afterlife with Archie.

The new project received a script-to-series commitment, which comes from the same guidance as the CW’s Riverdale and Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (another Archie horror title from writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Robert Hack, that was picked up for TV series adaptation): writer Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti‘s Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. Television where Aguirre-Sacasa and Berlanti are under overall deals.

Aguirre-Sacasa and Jimmy Gibbons executive produce via Aguirre-Sacasa’s Muckle Man Productions; Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman executive produce for Berlanti Productions; Jon Goldwater executive produces via Archie Comics Studios. Robert Aguirre-Sacasa, a film, TV, and Comic Book Writer took part in the Archie Comics Horror Imprint with two of their successful titles, Afterlife with Archie, and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, when he was named the publisher’s Chief Creative Officer in March 2014. He would eventually join another project involving Berlanti Productions with WB TV producing was sold to FOX. Riverdale was moved to The CW Network, where it would run for seven seasons, and inspire a spin-off series titled Katy Keene. Then came the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which ran for 36 episodes getting divided into four parts. This is the biggest development commitment to date for WBTV at Disney+. It marks a second high-profile streaming sale for Berlanti Prods. And WBTV at Disney this year, following spec script Foster Dade, written by Berlanti and Bash Doran, which is a hot prospect at Hulu with a pilot order.

Afterlife with Archie was first published in 2013, one of the first titles in Archie’s new Horror Imprint, and the first Comic Book publication that wasn’t marketed towards children. The comic was conceived not long after Archie Comics officially dropped the Comics Code Authority standard from their entire line-up in 2011. The first eight issues immediately sold out, the comic book series consists of 10 issues, while cover art does exist for issues #11 and #12, they have never been published in single issues or collected editions. Other comics in the horror line (which shared several characters, but not exactly related to each other.
