For years, Stan Lee made countless appearances at Comic Conventions until his death at 95 years old. Seven years after his death, he will be making an appearance at this year’s L.A. Comic-Con, this time as an AI Hologram.

Fans will be able to speak with the hologram at the Stan Lee Experience section of the con, a 1,500 ft. enclosed booth which costs between $15-$20 to enter, depending on whether you buy the tickets in advance. And like meeting a celebrity or getting autographs, there will be paid opportunities to take photos with the hologram or have a three-minute, one-on-one conversation with it. The Los Angeles Comic-Con takes place on September 26 – 28, 2025.
“We’ll never put words in his mouth that aren’t in line with things he spoke about in his lifetime, Fortunately, with decades of footage capturing his thoughts on so many subjects, we can build a voice that stays true, not always word for word, but always faithful in spirit, context, and intent.”
Bob Sabouni, Head of Stan Lee Legacy Programs for Kartoon Studios
This hologram is from Proto Hologram, Proto Inc. is the world’s first and only holographic communications platform with its own hardware, software, and app ecosystem. According to organizers, the Lee hologram may also pop up in different parts of the convention as a surprise. It was hinted that it could introduce a top-tier panel in the future. Their technology has been used for an ‘interactive mirror’ kiosk-style advertisements for The Conjuring mirror. Kartoon Studios, through Stan Lee Universe, controls certain rights and licenses for Stan Lee’s image and voice, while Disney and Marvel hold the rights to the characters Stan Lee co-created. In 2018, Marvel signed a 20-year deal with Stan Lee Universe, a venture between Genius Brands International and POW! Entertainment, to license the name and likeness of Lee for use in future feature films and television productions, as well as Disney theme parks, various “experiences”, and merchandising. This confirmed fans’ fears of Marvel digitally resurrecting the late Comic Creator, recent controversies and concerns surrounding AI and its relationship to the dead. It leads to these other concerns:
- Commercial Expolitation
- Insensitivity regarding past Elder Abuse
- Loss of Personal Agency (Turning him into a “Programmable Mascot” for Corporations)
- Blurs the line between tributes and exploitation
- Becoming an extension of brand-building
