James Gunn Announces HBO MAX Release Date for Superman

Recently, writer and director James Gunn announced on his social media channels that Superman would make his heroic debut on HBO MAX on September 19th. The film earned $615 million at the worldwide box office over the summer, making it the year’s highest-grossing comic book movie so far.

According to a press release from HBO MAX, it will make its global streaming debut on Friday, September 19 exclusively on HBO Max. SUPERMAN will debut on HBO linear on Saturday, September 20 at 8:00 p.m. ET. Included in its debut will be SUPERMAN with American Sign Language (ASL) will also stream exclusively on HBO Max, interpreted by Deaf ASL Interpreter Giovanni Maucere and directed by Leila Hanaumi (“Barbie with ASL,” “The Last of Us with ASL”).

Superman was released in theaters on July 11. In its opening weekend, it grossed $125 million at the domestic box office and remained the No. 1 movie in the world for two weeks until Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” dethroned it at the end of the month. On HBO Max, “Superman” will join other DC titles like “The Penguin” and “Peacemaker.”  It was described as the DCU’s True Beginning by Writer, and Director James Gunn. This was Superman’s first solo film since Zack Snyder’s 2013 film, Man of Steel. It was Gunn’s second-biggest opening after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. According to THR, Superman joins the ranks of other recently successful films such as A Minecraft Movie, and Ryan Coogler’s SinnersSuperman was the sixth WB title to open in first place this year, a feat no other studio has achieved thus far.

SUPERMAN stars David Corenswet (“Twisters,” “Hollywood”) in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult (the “X-Men” movies, “Juror #2”) as Lex Luthor. The film also stars Edi Gathegi (“For All Mankind”), Anthony Carrigan (“Barry,” “Gotham”), Nathan Fillion (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, “The Suicide Squad”), Isabela Merced (“Alien Romulus”), Skyler Gisondo (“Licorice Pizza,” “Booksmart”), Sara Sampaio (“At Midnight”), María Gabriela de Faría (“The Moodys”), Wendell Pierce (“Selma,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), Alan Tudyk (“Andor”), Pruitt Taylor Vince (“Bird Box”) and Neva Howell (“Greedy People”).

Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Superman made his heroic debut in Action Comics #1 in June 1938 (Cover Dated June 1938, published on April 18, 1938).
