Usagi Yojimbo is a creator-owned story, and was created by Stan Saki. It is an anthropomorphic tale set at the beginning of the Edo Period in Japanese History, focusing on a rabbit rōnin named Miyamoto Usagi, who was partially influenced by the legendary swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. Usagi Yojimbo is also influenced by Japanese Cinema, with references to the cinematic work of Akira Kurosawa, the title of the story paying homage to Kurosawa’s 1961 film Yojimbo while Usagi Yojimbo also includes references to Lone Wolf and Cub, and Zatoichi. Usagi first appeared in the anthology Albedo Anthropomorphics in 1984, and later in the Fantagraphics Books anthropomorphic anthology Critters, before appearing in his series in 1987. Since its debut, it has been published by four different publishers including Fantagraphics, Mirage Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and finally, IDW Publishing. Usagi has also made cameo appearances in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the comic, three of the animated series, and their respective toy lines). Usagi Yojimbo was adapted into a CGI animated series titled Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles, thanks to a partnership with Netflix Animation. As for other media appearances, Usagi has made two video game appearances that include Samurai Warrior: The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo for the Commodore 64 in 1988, and as a DLC Character in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge in August 2023.
