It may have been one of the holiest weekends due to Easter, but it was a different story at the Box Office, which saw a delightfully sinful debut of actor Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther, CREED, Just Mercy) and Director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, CREED, Judas and the Black Messiah)’s Supernatural horror film, Sinners. Sinners dethroned Warner Bros’ other box office hit adapted from the hit video game, Minecraft (which the Minecraft Movie is already listed on Amazon for pre-order on Prime Video!).
Sinners opened on Friday in 3,308 theaters across North America collecting $48 million, according to Deadline, it outperformed Sunday’s estimates of $45.6 million. It also was the biggest debut for an original film since Jordan Peele’s “Us” opened to $71 million in 2019 and an excellent opening for a period horror film. The numbers are also in for the Global market debut, opening to $15.6 million overseas from 71 markets, bringing it to $71.3 Million in its global debut. The Final numbers for Monday came in, earning $55.8M. This was the second-best Monday ever for an R-rated horror movie after 2017’s It which did $8.76M, and it’s the third-best Monday overall for a horror film after the PG-13 A Quiet Place Part II‘s Memorial Day ($9.5M) and It.
Sinners Director, Ryan Coogler reacted to the news regarding the film’s box office success, penning a special thank-you letter to the fans, writing that his heart is “bursting” with “eternal gratitude.” the film has accomplished a lot in its short time, including boasting a near-perfect 98% average on Rotten Tomatoes, which goes to show that fans are craving more diverse stories and entertainment. A fun fact about this film is that it was the first time a female director of photography has shot a movie on large format IMAX film, a historic first for female cinematographers.
