It isn’t a secret that professional wrestlers in this day and age like to show off their Geek Fandom, but at last night’s AEW Dynasty, it was Swerve Strickland putting a shock to our systems with his Static-themed Ring Attire.

It was the biggest night for the former heavyweight champion, going up against the current AEW World Heavyweight Champion, Jon Moxley, and while he didn’t win the title back, Swerve had fans talking about not only his skills as a wrestler but also his taste in Superheroes. Strickland’s attire paid tribute to artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey‘s Run It Back look from DC‘s Static: Season One, which was part of the Milestone Media Imprint. Speaking of Ivey, he shared on social media that he was surprised to see it in Wrestling but thought it was cool to see it referenced.

Seeing Swerve Strickland wearing the Static-themed tights in action has fans excited to see the Milestone hero brought to life, giving them hope to see Static and these other iconic heroes created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, Derek T. Dingle, and Christopher Priest return in once more in modern media.

Static made his debut in a three-page preview in Milestone Comics‘ Icon #1 (May 1993) with his first full appearance in Static #1 (June 1993), consisting of the creative team of writers Dwayne McDuffie, and Robert L. Washington III and illustrated by John Paul Leon. Since his debut, Static has been adapted into an animated television series (suited for younger audiences), had one video game adaption, and has made appearances in comic books, and DC video games. An animated film featuring Static and other Milestone heroes was in development in 2021, but nothing has been mentioned since the DC Fandome presentation. As for the live-action film, Michael B. Jordan is producing the film with his company, Outlier Society Production, and Reginald Hudlin (House Party, The Boondocks, Marshall) who also was part of Disney Plus’s “Safety”.
