Big news coming your way Sonic fans, our favorite Blue Blur’s third cinematic adventure broke another new record. This time it’s speeding past Legendary Pictures Detective Pikachu according to Box Office Mojo and ComicBook, becoming the second highest-grossing video game movie of all time.
The 2019 Pokémon film earned $450 million worldwide, while Sonic the Hedgehog 3 now has a global take of more than $462 million, sadly still trailing behind Illumination’s Super Mario film, which is on top at $1,360,847,665. If you only count the live-action adaptions, Sonic is leading the way.

It is an impressive feat that the film has accomplished so much and that it has been a month since its digital home release with pre-orders still being taken for the physical media release set for April. Sonic will be returning for a fourth film, which is set to be released in theaters on March 19, 2027, but the details for it are scarce at this time, it is presumed that the main cast will return along with Director Jeff Fowler. The ending of the third film set up the debut of two popular characters that will most likely play a big role in the fourth film.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opened in Theaters on December 20, 2024, featuring the return of cast members Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Lee Majdoub. It also featured actor Keanu Reeves who took on the role of Shadow the Hedgehog, and Jim Carrey took on another role in the film (Keep in mind, it was “For the Money” on his return) as Professor Gerald Robotnik, Ivo Robotnik’s Grandfather. The third film celebrated a new milestone, speeding past the $1 Billion mark at the Global Box Office, making it the highest-grossing film in the Sonic film franchise. Paramount recently announced that the fourth film is in development. Shadow played a big role in the new video game Sonic x Shadow Generations, which is available now for the following consoles: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows. The Digital version of the film is available now to buy or rent on Amazon, with a 3-film Digital Collection available to purchase.
