Sonic 3 and Mufasa Continue Their Box Office Brawl During the Weekend

Two family film titans continued their box office clash during the weekend, SEGA and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and The King of Live-Action Remakes (aka Walt Disney) Mufasa: The Lion King are locked in a battle for the top spot at the North American Box Office during the Christmas Holiday, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 claiming the No. One spot for its second weekend.

Our favorite Blue Rodent’s third adventure has brought in $74 million from the international markets, tallying the global earnings to $211.5 million. The third film is on track to beat its predecessors, for example, it has earned superior reviews and holds a “fresh” 88% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, Disney’s new live-action prequel/sequel film, Mufasa: The Lion King brought in $77.1 million from 52 markets, raising the international total to $214.5 million and global to $328 million, flexing their entertainment muscles to try to intimidate their competition. Their other family film, Moana 2 is set to reach a new milestone in the coming days, set to earn $900 million, according to Deadline, added $36.1 million from 52 offshore markets for an international running total of $487.9 million. Global is estimated at $882.5 million through today, with signs pointing to reaching the $1 billion threshold. Both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King are now playing in theaters.
